Lupin Book Club

The Barely Literate Book Club invites you to join Lupin’s monthly literary discussion group. The selected book for each month is published in our weekly newsletter, This Weekend At Lupin. Discussions are moderated but informal, focusing on themes, characters, and reader interpretations. Participants are encouraged to prepare thoughts or questions about the book before each meeting.

February Book Club Selection: The Only Woman in the Room by Marie Benedict

The Only Woman in the Room by Marie Benedict tells the story of Hedy Lamarr, the famous actress, focusing on her secret life as a brilliant scientist who helped develop a frequency-hopping technology that became a precursor to modern Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It details her escape from her controlling Nazi arms-dealing husband, her rise to Hollywood stardom, and her efforts to use her scientific knowledge to aid the Allied war effort against the Nazis. The books contrasts her movie star public image with her private genius, exploring her escape from Nazi persecution and her desire to be recognized for her intellect as well as her beauty.
