James (2024) by Percival Everett: Read the book and join the discussion on the Waterfall Lawn – all are welcome!
Percival Everett’s James (2024) reimagines Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of Jim—renamed James—a sharp, subversive man who hides his intelligence to survive slavery. Unlike Twain’s original, Everett’s James secretly teaches others to read and write while navigating the dangers of the antebellum South with wit and defiance. The novel blends satire and tragedy, critiquing racism and reclaiming a marginalized voice in American literature. A bold revision of a classic, James challenges old narratives while delivering a gripping, darkly humorous story.
